Dangerous Drugs - Herceptin
Herceptin, manufactured by Genentech, Inc., was created to treat breast cancer. The drug, also known as trastuzumab, is administered once a week or once every three weeks intravenously.
Studies have shown that Herceptin significantly increases heart rates and degrades coronary conditions in patients who use the drug, causing cardiac dysfunction in 2-7% of patients who use it. When combined with anthracycline chemotherapy, the risk of cardiac risk and dysfunction is increased. Herceptin treatment is also quite expensive, and the heart problems it can potentially cause only add to the financial and personal cost.
