Dangerous Drugs - Rezulin
Rezulin is prescribed to diabetics who use insulin but cannot effectively regulate their blood sugar via diet and exercise alone. It assists the effects of insulin by drawing sugar from the blood into cells to supply energy. Rezulin has accumulated more than 63 reports of users dying of liver failure, but it is estimated the total number of deaths associated with Rezulin is as much as ten times higher than those reported.
In December of 1997, Rezulin was banned in England following the death of an American who used the drug. Warner-Lambert, the manufacturer of the drug, successfully fought a ban on the drug in the U.S. for 27 months before the FDA decided to prohibit further sales on March 21, 2000. The drug brought in $1.8 billion in revenue for the company.
