Dangerous Drugs - Risperdal
Risperdal is a newer atypical anti psychotic drug prescribed to help people combat Schizophrenia. Risperdal has been linked to higher incidence rates of Diabetes amongst patients who use the drug. The risk of a patient's contraction of the disease has shown to be as much as 50% higher compared to older anti-psychotics.
Risperdal has been linked to Neuroleptic Malginant Syndrome, or NMS, Tardive Dyskinesia and stroke. More than 37 reports of stroke or stroke-like events, including 16 deaths linked to the drug, have been reported. In April 2003, Johnson & Johnson sent warning letters to physicians nationwide reporting the drug's elevated risk of stroke in elderly patients.
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome is a potentially fatal muscular/nervous system disorder which causes muscle rigidity and irregular blood pressure or pulse. Tardive Dyskinesia is a central nervous system disorder which can result in involuntary movement of the limbs and twitching of the face and tongue. The FDA also names the following risks as potential side effects of Risperdal: increased chance of death in elderly persons, high blood sugar and diabetes, strokes, low blood pressure and dizziness, seizures, difficulty swallowing, anxiety, weight gain, and vision changes.
Risperdal is sometimes prescribed to treat mental illness and dementia in older patients. This use is not approved by the FDA and can lead to strokes.
