D-TRONplus Insulin Pumps
Insulin pumps are used to help those with diabetes control their blood sugar levels with greater precision and without the inconvenience of needle injections. However, faulty Disetronic D-TRONplus Power Packs may cause D-TRONplus insulin pumps to shut down without warning. The abrupt shutdown of the D-TRONplus insulin pump is due to a change in the battery design by its manufacturer. As a result, the pump does not have enough time to recognize a decrease in the power supply, which causes the pump to shut down before the audible and vibrating low power alarms are triggered.
If a shutdown occurs, insulin delivery is interrupted, which may lead to uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and thus hyperglycemia, which can cause serious patient injury and/or death. The symptoms of hyperglycemia may include nausea and vomiting; blurred vision; excessive thirst or hunger; frequent urination; fatigue, tiredness and sleepiness; headache; fruity acetone breath; abdominal pain; and coma.
Disetronic issued a voluntary nationwide recall of the D-TRONplus Power Packs because of their potential to shut down the pumps without warning. If you believe a faulty D-TRONplus insulin pump or D-TRONplus power pack was the cause of your severe diabetes-related symptoms, contact our offices as soon as possible.
